Zing and Zizz

In Room 14 we did kitchen chemistry.  We had to mix acids with carbonates to see the reactions.
The acids are:
 lemon juice
 orange juice
vinegar
grapefruit
 and tomato juice

The carbonates are:
washing soda
 chalk
 baking soda
and crushed egg shells.

What we learnt  was some acids  doesn't always have a reaction and it always produces gas called carbon dioxide .

Carbon +Salt+Water
[CO2]+[CaCI2]+[H2O]

Red Cabbage Indicator

Today room 14 did a red cabbage indicator. Each table group had a cup of indicator. One person from each table got a tube and held it for another person to put some indicator in it. We added some other ingredients to the tube for example washing powder. We shook it and it would change colour then we measured whether it was an acid or a base.

Athletics

Today we had an athletics session with Diane. We did cricket throwing and high jump. We have to lift our arms for high jump and we have to wind up our arm ready to throw in throwing. We had lots of fun.

Solids, Liquids, Gases - What are these?!

Today we started our Chemistry unit, with the big idea focuses being CHANGE.  We had to have a think about what we knew about the three words Solid, Liquid and Gas.  We then had to sort some objects cards under the heading that we thought they went in.  We were quite surprised as we got most of these correct!

One card that stumped us though was MERCURY.  What do you know about this?
Did you know it is actually a metal, but it doesn't go under the solid heading - guess what?!  Mercury is a liquid!

Here are some photos of us completing the silent card shuffle.

Ella's Banana Experiment

In room 14 we have been focusing on kitchen chemistry. We were given and extension task for our home learning project, it was to but an banana in a snap lock bag and observe the changes of the banana over the week. I have made a book that I jot down all of the changes I see.

Chemistry - What do you already know?

This term we are going to be studying Chemistry!  Have a think and then add your ideas about about the questions below to the padlet.
What is Chemistry?
What curriculum area is Chemistry from?
What kinds of things would you expect to be doing in Chemistry?
